Aniara
I was asked to create Vinyl Sleeves for any opera of my choice. The two styles we had to depict were Op-Art and a version similar to Alex Steinweiss.
In my rendition of a Steinweiss album cover, I wanted to depict the story of Arniara. The passengers feel a sense of loss. knowing that they will never find another planet to live on. In the play, they have to be told that their mission to Mars has failed. I used the lines moving around Mars in the center to do that. By curving the path around Mars, my graphic corresponds with Steinweiss’s use of motion and simple graphics.
In my rendition of an Op Art album cover, I wanted to depict the movement of the ship. By manipulating the lines below the engines of my graphic, it gives the depiction of movement. The lines on the back of the cover also indicate the movement of not only the ship but space in general. Instead of a synopsis on the back, I included two songs from the Opera and the meaning behind them. This corresponds with the back of vinyl covers.
